Planting Plan

Stages in developing a new design:

  • Stage 1. INITIAL CONSULTATION
I will visit you to discuss your landscape/garden requirements and familiarise myself with the conditions of the site. From this consultation I will quote a cost for design work for Stage 2.

  • Stage 2. SITE SURVEY AND SKETCH PLAN
On small sites without complex levels, I will take the site measurements myself. (Please note that these surveys are for landscape purposes only to aid in the drawing of the sketch plan and are not available to clients). In the event that a client requires a copy of the survey for other purposes, or if the site is large and/or requires precise levels to be taken, a surveyor will be instructed to produce a building and land survey, charged separately.

I will then prepare the first drawing, the sketch plan, which gives you an overall proposal and layout based on our initial discussion and is the first major creative stage of the design process. It does not include planting or constructional details. I will normally visit you again to talk you through my ideas.

  • Stage 3. MASTER PLAN, SPECIFICATIONS AND CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS
The master plan is the approved sketch plan incorporating any amendments requested by the client. It also includes setting out dimensions, details of falls and drainage, and other relevant information. A full written specification will be drawn up for the design, detailing materials and construction requirements, including reference to British Standards where relevant, for use by the contractor.

Drawings showing construction details of steps, paving, water features and/or other structures will be prepared as necessary, depending on the project.

  • Stage 4. GOING OUT TO TENDER/APPOINTING CONTRACTORS
Contractors are appointed by the client, but I will advise on and supply the necessary information for going out to tender as required.

  • Stage 5. PLANTING PLAN
Of equal importance to the sketch plan, this is the other major creative stage of the design process. On the basis of an approved sketch plan/master plan I will prepare a planting plan for the garden showing the species of plants recommended and their positioning. If required, I will quote to source and supply these plants at the appropriate time. I will normally visit you again to discuss my proposal.

  • Stage 6. SITE INSPECTIONS
I will normally visit the site with the contractor initially to talk through the design, again when the design is set out, and again when work is nearing completion. I will be available to communicate with the contractor should problems or a need for clarification arise.
